Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic set for Italian Cup clash

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s AC Milan are set for a mouthwatering semi-final clash. Reuters

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo and AC Milan’s stalwart Zlatan Ibrahimovic are set to face each other in the clash of the titans at the Italian Cup semi-final, first leg on Thursday.

Both Ronaldo and Zlatan were on target in their teams’ respective matches at the weekend. But Juventus lost to Verona and Milan conceded a two-goal lead against city rivals Inter to los the derby 4-2.

“It wasn’t the result we wanted,” said the 35-year-old Ronaldo despite becoming the first Juventus player to score in 10 successive league games, just one game short of the Serie A record.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored 23 goals in all competitions this season.

Ibrahimovic, 38, has scored three goals since returning to Milan last month.

The Swede headed in the second goal on Sunday after setting up the first, but Inter hit back with four second-half strikes.

“I showed that I can still make a difference, even at 38,” he said.

But Inter striker Romelu Lukaku will be looking to upstage the two other former Manchester United players against Napoli in the other last-four first leg on Wednesday.

Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli, despite their current slump, ousted holders Lazio in the quarter-finals.

“There’s a new king in town,” a jubilant Lukaku wrote on Twitter after scoring the fourth goal for Inter in Sunday’s derby.

“We run this town.”

The Belgian was replying to Ibrahimovic’s pre-derby post saying that “lions don’t compare themselves to humans”.

Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri has reason to be worried by his side’s away form, with the defending Serie A champions having lost their last two games on the road.

“I hope that someone will help me, it’s something we have to resolve,” Sarri said after the loss to Verona.

“Right now we have a difference in performance between home and away.”

Juventus are bidding to reclaim the trophy which they held for four seasons until losing to eventual runners-up Atalanta in the quarters last year.

Antonio Conte’s Inter are the only one of the four semi-finalists to win in Serie A at the weekend, with Napoli crashing to a 3-2 defeat by lowly Lecce.

Inter’s victory lifted them ahead of Juventus on goal difference at the top of the table, as they target their first Scudetto since 2010. The second-leg ties will take place on March 4 and 5.

Next Lionel Messi Will Be More Superhuman Like Cristiano Ronaldo, Claims Former Real Madrid Striker

  • Former Real Madrid striker Valdano also managed the club between 1994 and 1996
  • According to him, players with Messi's backgrounds will not succeed in the future
  • Valdano won the FIFA World Cup with Argentina in 1986
Former Argentine soccer player Jorge Valdano has hailed Lionel Messi as a “miracle” while he said the sport’s next genius talent will be “more physically superhuman” like Cristiano Ronaldo.
The ex-Real Madrid striker, who also managed the club between 1994 and 1996, went on to add that Messi has the power of a superstar and a hero and that has more to do with his past growing up days when he played in the streets of his native Argentina. While the 64-year-old striker admitted that particular experience has helped in shaping Messi, he also has predicted that the game is changing fast in that regard.
“Messi is a formative miracle: He owes his gifts to both the streets and the academy. Until the age of 13 he grew up in Argentina, with more informal education, then moved to Barcelona where he learned to play attractive football—but it was much more formal."
"The streets have disappeared from training schools for football players. In South America, there are still areas of poverty where football continues to reign. The next Messi will be more similar to Cristiano Ronaldo than Messi, more physically superhuman, more competitive, just as heroic, but cut from a different cloth,” Valdano added in a recent interview.
The Argentine veteran drew a comparison between Messi and Ronaldo’s journey in soccer. Born in Madeira, Portugal, Ronaldo joined the academy of Sporting CP at an early age of 12. He played one season of senior soccer before he joined the Threatre of Dreams, Manchester United, in 2003.

According to Valdano, Ronaldo’s path will be more reasonable for soccer’s next icon and players with Messi’s background will possibly be less likely to succeed.
The FC Barcelona skipper Messi recently defeated Ronaldo to win a record sixth Ballon d’Or award, one more than the Portuguese and his countryman and 1986 FIFA World Cup winner Valdano acknowledged his precious talent.
“Then, on the pitch, he has the power to imbalance any side. He has decided three of the last four results with his devastating influence. He has become more mature and more aware of his power. There is only one Messi. It's hard to know what will come after him. Taking into consideration that a genius is born every 15 or 20 years, the next one will have a more academic background,” Valdano added.

Incredible video tribute to both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo goes viral

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will go down as two of the greatest footballers to ever grace the game.
We may never see an era dominated by the same two men again. For over a decade, the pair have been untouchable.
Fans love to argue over who truly deserves the GOAT crown but in all honesty, it will be so hard to separate the two once they retire.
Instead, we should just sit back and enjoy their brilliance for the time they have left on a football pitch.
That seems to be exactly what one Twitter user is doing after posting a video comparing Messi and Ronaldo, which has since gone viral.
It begins with footage of the pair celebrating success with their respective teams - Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The comes a compilation of the pairs greatest goals back-to-back, with commentators gushing over the sheer brilliance of both men.
After that, the video rolls into BT Sport pundits Gary Lineker and Rio Ferdinand praising Messi and Ronaldo, before their impact off the pitch is shown at the end. Check it out below:
Wow, what a brilliant compilation. It's not surprising the video already has over 23,000 likes and 11,000 retweets in less than 24 hours.
We may never see anything like these two again.
Supporters may love to argue over who the best player is, but the pair themselves have been nothing but complimentary about each other.
Messi and Ronaldo have dominated for over a decade
"Messi makes me a better player and vice versa," Ronaldo has said in the past.
"I have an excellent professional relationship with Messi because we have been sharing the same moments for 15 years."
The Argentine also recently spoke about their special rivalry last year:
"The sporting duel between us was very nice on a personal level and I think people had fun too, whether it was from Madrid or from Barca, or even only football fans in general."
Messi and Ronaldo have spoken about eachother before
If both men can be civil with one another despite their rivalry, then football fans really should be too.
Just sit back and enjoy Messi and Ronaldo while they're still on top because they won't be around forever.

'Sarri is Alone': Italian press slam former Chelsea boss after Juventus lose grip on Serie A with doubts over manager who is 'only top thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's goals'

Maurizio Sarri is cutting a lonely figure at Juventus and is only in a job because of Cristiano Ronaldo's blistering form, according to reports in Italy.
The Italian press have been scathing of Sarri's management of Juventus and that intensified following a 2-1 defeat away at Verona.
Juventus have been beaten three times in Serie A and are now second in the league on goal difference to Inter Milan, who have only lost once this season.

The front page of Corriere dello Sport reports that 'Sarri is alone', adding they are only high up the table because of Ronaldo's 20 league goals.
The report inside adds: 'From the beginning, Sarri was greeted by a bit of scepticism, at least as regards the Bianconeri split in half between those who hoped for a change in style and those who continued to prefer victory over everything else.'
Sarri's ability to galvanise his squad has also been questioned, with the examples of Mario Mandzukic and Emre Can used - both have left Juventus since Sarri took charge last year.
It has also been reported that Juventus are only near the top because of Cristiano Ronaldo

Similar has also been said about the way Sarri has continued to play Gonzalo Higuain, who has scored eight times in 30 appearances.
There is also a fear at Juventus that Sarri could scupper their hopes of winning a ninth Scudetto on the bounce.
There is a strong appetite among the Juventus hierarchy for the return of Massimiliano Allegri, who won Serie A five times with Juventus before leaving last summer.

Allegri's comments when announcing his departure have also been highlighted by Corriere dello Sport.
'Those who win are better than the others. Now I would like to give an example but if I do it all comes down,' Allegri is quoted as saying.
It suggests that, no matter how the team performs on the pitch, winning is most important.
Aiming to produce the perfect performance over the correct result is another criticism that has been made of Sarri's way of playing.
Reports also emerged on Monday night that Juventus president Andrea Agnelli is convinced that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola would be the right man to re-invigorate the club.
Guardiola is, however, contracted to City until the summer of 2021 and isn't expected to leave the Premier League champions before his deal expires.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on the same team? How Juventus could line up under Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola could be the man to unite Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi after all this time if the reports about him moving to Juventus are true

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could be lining up for the same team if Pep Guardiola makes the switch to Juventus.

It comes after a long season of rumours that Guardiola's heart has gone at City.
And Juve would be ahead in the queue to snap up the Catalan coach by offering him the chance to splash the cash.
One potential arrival at Juve could also be Messi, who has had a tough month at Barcelona.
The Argentine legend fell out with members of the board after lashing out at sporting director Eric Abidal.

It led to intense speculation that the 32-year-old could leave the Nou Camp for City.
But if Guardiola was to depart Manchester, too, Messi could instead follow his former mentor to Juve instead.
The project could intrigue the Spanish tactician as it is the last top European league he has not conquered.
Guardiola has titles in Spain with Barcelona, Germany with Bayern Munich and England with City.
Italy is probably the next big footballing country of the continent, while France and Portugal are tussling it out for fifth.
Pep Guardiola could bring about some big changes to Juventus
And though Paris St-Germain could easily sway Guardiola with cash, that might not be the ideal place for the 49-year-old at this stage of his career.
Therefore, coaching Juventus would make the most sense in terms of the next step in his career.
Many of the current crop fit straight into his philosophy, with Miralem Pjanic, Paulo Dybala, Matthijs de Ligt and Wojciech Szczesny able to play his possession style of football.
